An Open Letter of Tribute to Miss Marion MeechApril 28, 2003 My dear Marion, You left whilst I was away. There was no opportunity to say good-bye. Nevertheless, through this letter, I wish to express my profound respect for you as my teacher, and gratitude to you for our enduring friendship. You were a textbook of history brought to life. From the precision of your verbal articulation and warmth of delivery through flashing, sparkling eyes, we, your attentive students effortlessly imbibed your wealth of knowledge. You influenced us most positively. For over half a century, I have cherished fond memories of our visitations; during your sabbatical in London; at your refuge from the city on Lake Scugog; and in our city of Toronto where you now rest. Our conversations always recounted the .where-abouts. and .who.s doing what-abouts. of fellow Lisgarites. Your vivid recollections of our names, dates and characterizations were testimonial to your personal interest in each of us. We were part of your living history, as you were ours. Lisgar Collegiate Institute's enviable reputation reflected the excellence of its staff. Marion, you were unique amongst its educators. You were a leader amongst those who contributed to its stature. Lisgar Collegiate now mourns its loss of you as a living part; but it can rejoice at your addition to its Immortal Strength. Until we meet again, Your student and friend, |
